The Muscle Car Era stretched from 1964 through the early 1970s. And each year brought larger, faster, gutsier models. The oil embargo would ultimately bring the muscle era to a close, but not before Detroit produced some of history's greatest automotive legends, including the 1971 Plymouth Barracuda. The last of this great "Barracudas," the 1971 model pulled out all the stops. Marketed as a ready-made street car as well as a rough and ready racer, the '71 'Cuda came with three two-barrel carburetors, a huge tub-shaped air cleaner and enough chrome to guarantee that the car got noticed. In addition to the standard 383 V-8 engine or the optional 426 Hemi engine, the '71 could be equipped with an incredible 440 V-8 that produced a victory-snatching 390 horsepower.
